ELEVEN

C arlie slowed her pace. She turned, watched the fiery spectacle. “Wow…”

Fingers of flame rose, curled over the roof of the car. Then, with a horrific whoosh, they engulfed the entire vehicle.

A hand landed on her back, pushed and sent her stumbling forward again.

“Run!” Sonia cried. “It’s gonna blow!”

They pelted down the side of the road, and before long, Carlie heard the now-familiar sound of approaching law enforcement vehicle’s sirens. Before she got involved with all these FBI agents and a Federal Marshal she’d rarely given them much thought. Now they represented the opportunity to survive whatever horror had just befallen her.

Oh, yeah. What a life!

Booooom!

The gas tank blew. Carlie tried to breathe, but a sharp pain hit her right side. “Aaaahhh…!”

She bent over, and the footsteps that had accompanied her escape also came to a stop.

“What’s wrong?” Dan asked, anxiety in his voice. “Are you hurt?”

“No…stitch in…my side.”

Sonia patted Carlie’s back. “You poor thing. Your life’s become a real mess, hasn’t it?”

Carlie gave her a dark look. “You…have to ask?”

Just then, a police car screeched to a stop at their side. Two officers stepped out. Their sunglasses gave them a somewhat sinister appearance. Carlie wasn’t sure she could go through her by now one millionth interrogation. She let Dan do the talking.

But that wasn’t good enough for Garcia and O’Ferris. Even after they’d verified that Dan and Sonia were exactly who they’d said they were, the two officers wanted to hear Carlie’s version of the blazing episode.

Exhaustion overtook her. Her words came out in bursts and spurts. The two cops must’ve thought her impaired in some way, because at one point, she heard Dan assure them he’d never seen her under the influence of anything but her own nuttiness.

Nice, very nice.

Still, a weak smile tried to break through, but Carlie couldn’t dredge up even that much energy. Her eyelids drooped and her shoulders sagged.

As if from a great distance, she heard Sonia say, “Guys? I think we’re losing her. She’s had a rough time for months now, and it may finally be hitting her.”

“Great timing,” one of the officers, Carlie didn’t know which, offered. “Fine. Get her some rest, but we’ll have more questions for her at a later time.”

“Sure. Why not?” she muttered. “That’s all anyone ever wants.”

“Not everyone, princess,” Dan countered.

“I’m not a princess—”

“Yeah, I know. You told me that already.” He picked her up in his arms. “Here we go,” he added. “Hang on.”

Dan’s steps rocking her against his chest, lulled her to sleep. She was so tired….

She awoke in a bed. How long had she slept? Where was she?

Carlie sat up, and although she felt okay, she knew time had passed since the roadside interrogation that never was. She rubbed her eyes, focused, and realized someone—Dan, most likely—had brought her to her new little house. It had already become familiar. The bed wore threadbare sheets. Years of use and washing had pilled the blanket to a near tufted condition. Dust and handprints had turned the walls dingy.
